St. John's Junior School received an official recognition from the World Song Moo Kwan Association in February 2017. The official charter of affiliation was presented to our club by the President of Song Moo Kwan in Europe, Grandmaster Guy Jones. This official document has been signed by Senior Grandmaster Hee Sang Ro, the son of the founding father of Taekwondo, Byung Jik Ro. This means that our club now belongs to a very large global Taekwondo network.
St Johns Junior school maintains close ties with O'Loughlin Gaels GAA club. The club was founded in 1969 and proudly represents St John’s Parish, Johnswell, Dunmore and Kilkenny City East. It boast thriving juvenile sections for both boys and girls with teams from u6 to u18 serving St. John's Parish, Kilkenny. GAA skills are taught to 1st and 2nd class during the spring/summer months.
Throughout the year the school provides tuition in choir singing and classes receive tuition in music and the use of a range of instruments, through fun, engaging and active lessons with Clare Kilkenny of Music Generation Kilkenny.
First and Second class receive tuition in swimming at the Watershed Sports and Leisure Centre. The syllabus follows the Swim Ireland, Child Learn to Swim Programme. The teachers specialise in teaching children to swim and take immense pride in bringing swimmers who join as complete novices through each programme level as they grow into skilful and proficient young swimmers.
We have recently started a coding club in the school. It is at the early beginnings stage. In the club we will be using Beebot's to learn how to code basic instructions and we will progress onto Scratch Junior, an app for coding on our Ipads.
Gymnastics tuition is delivered throughout the year by an qualified gymnastics instructor. Lessons take place in the school hall.
Irish dancing tuition takes place in the school, after school hours, and is provided by Bastable Warren School of Irish Dancing, with Maeve Warren TCRG.
